Enemies – Alpha Waves (2008)

Sounds like: Sharkskeepmoving’s cruisy-ness with added post-rock awesomeness. Also, Toe.

“Why does Ireland have so many fine instrumental rock bands? The Rednecks, Ten Past Seven, Adebisi Shank, God is an Astronaut yadda yadda yadda. Well it sounds like you can add Enemies to that list. The quickest point of reference for this release is the newest Rednecks material: plenty of high fret playing with soothing, emotive melodies.” (state)
Irish post-rock band, Enemies was originally conceived as a solo project for Kidd Blunt guitarist Eoin Whitfield, but in 2007 he decided to recruit three permanent members, and by the sound of their debut EP, “Alpha Waves”, this was a great move.
The beautiful thing about this release is how well tracks build up from a catchy, mathy riff (with plenty of fret-board tapping to keep Dave Knudson fans happy) to an all out post-rock guitar attack. The first track, ‘Two Lads’ for example, hints at a big change quite quickly but this serves only as a tease to the listener. But patience is soon rewarded as the heavy guitar riff starts to kick in around the four minute mark and gets more and more involved until the climax of the song.
Enemies keep things interesting by really varying the formula used for each track. Each song isn’t five minutes of building up to two minutes of heaviness and noise. ‘A Blind Cocktail’ keeps an easy, relaxed pace over the course of the song while ‘For One Night Only’ feels very similar until the final minute when it really breaks out. ‘Deas X 3′ has much darker overtones and has one of the heavier moments on the EP before putting on the breaks and coming to a very relaxed finish.
Enemies are another brilliant Irish post-rock outfit and if ‘Alpha Waves’ is anything to go by, they have a bright future ahead of them.
